It All Started With A Chair……

It all started with a rocking chair.....
A beloved family piece with a broken seat.  I searched for a caner to replace the seat without success.  It turns out that there are very few in the Green Mountain State of Vermont who still practice this once practical and necessary craft.
I put out a post on our local community forum, and behold, there was someone near and dear who not only knew how to cane, but offered to teach me how to weave a new seat.  I fell in love with the calm and rhythmic, "over one, under one, over one, under one......" and seeing the pattern take shape with each new strand.  I was hooked and couldn't wait to do more.
As I researched the craft further, I found that there is an array  of beautiful patterns and a variety of natural materials used to to create practical, useful and charming chair backs and seats, stools and foot rests.
I discovered the ART of seat weaving and it has become my desire to share the beauty of this craft along with so many other traditional skills that are slowly falling by the way side in the age of mass production and technology.
